Ablution and Ghusul
Ghusul refers to the full ablution (ritual washing) performed in Islam. In order to enter a state of purity before salat (prayer), a Muslim usually performs the partial ablution, or also known as wudhu.
Ablution/Ghusul is recommended for the following:
- Offering Friday Prayers.
- Entering ehram for Hajj.
- Being unconscious.
- Burying a mushrik.
- Before going out for the Eid prayer.
- Before a new Muslim takes shahada for the first time.
In other cases a ghusl is obligatory in the following:
- After having sexual intercourse or any discharge of semen or sexual fluids.
- After a woman completes her menstrual cycle.
- After a woman gives birth.
- Death away from the battlefield
